2011 was a spectacular year for Carrier Pigeon. It would never have been possible to expand my business, move into a new studio and continue to do what I love without the support of my friends, family and fans. Contemporary painter Shawn McNulty will have his studio #217 open showcasing some of the new work for his upcoming show at Rosalux Gallery in April. He will also have 20x20” signed open edition giclee prints on paper for the low price of $60 (unframed) and $120 (framed), as well as various older prints that are not listed on his website. Soo Visual Arts Center is proud to present Everybody Wins, a Shackway Corporation retrospective and product pavilion by artist David Sollie. Through an innovative and at times interactive installation, Sollie’s exhibition will explore dynamics of power and human nature—both the best and worst of our motivations—through the lens of Shackway Corporation’s history.
As described by Sollie, Shackway’s morally hazy corporate history is a reflection of the highs and lows of the American dream. Founded in 1948 by Bruce Milburn (Sollie's paternal grandfather), it rose from humble beginnings to become a “worldwide marketing octopus,” selling a wide variety of products ranging from the shockingly dangerous to the heroically ingenious. In David’s own words:
This all began as a way of asking questions about my grandfather, but investigating the Shackway corporation's history has become a way of posing questions about the larger family of mankind. Heading a large company like Shackway is just like having piles of money, or political power: not inherently good or bad, but having tremendous resources can magnify the things that are good or bad in human nature. We are part of nature, and like nature, we can be both predatory and noble.
The show uses the Shackway Company’s historical archives, peculiar products and advertising, to reflect how humanities’ best intentions sometimes collide with our most base impulses. In the spirit of Sollie advocating for the collective win, visitors will receive an original "Grandma Shackway’s Finest" soup label in exchange for bringing in non-perishable food donations. After the close of the exhibition the food will be donated to Lighthouse CSP, the drop in center and kitchen for Resource-Spectrum Community Mental Health (a full service center that helps individuals with serious mental illness live successfully in the community).

The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing's Art of Healing Program provides arts-based wellness intervention and education, and supports a healing environment. The Penny George Institute works in close collaboration with the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute - Unity Hospital and has expertise in serving cancer patients, survivors, and their families.
The current featured artist is Thorp tenant Mary Welke. She paints landscapes and things in nature with a focus on contemplation, meditation and mindfulness of the ever changing natural environment. Welke's work is progressive as she goes from the studio to nature and back again. She explores aspects of light, shimmer, and subtle changes in nature through the use of iridescent and regular paint, repetition of brush stroke and layering. She digs back into layers with mists of water which allows the paint to run. The paintings change color and shimmer depending on the light and where the viewer stands.
Welke received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and a master's in fine arts from Pratt Institute in New York City.

"Yogasana is the brand-name of a series of products that are helpful in the practice of yoga and (we hope) contribute towards one's well being.
We have been making cotton rugs in India for the past 15 years. We used our expertise in cotton to make a rug that's dedicated to the practice of yoga. Our hand-loomed rugs are extremely strong. We warranty them for 15 years but you can expect them to last a lifetime.
The rugs are hand-make on manual looms in an area of India that was the birthplace of yoga. The idea of a cotton mat for yoga is not new... but dates back to the origin of the practice.
We hope that our Yogasana rug will support your yoga practice and we would enjoy your sharing the results with us."

Thorp & CBC Tenant Artist Elizabeth Simonson at the Weisman Art Museum June 19
The ten artists in WAM's upcoming exhibition Ordinarily Here are busy installing work in advance of the show's opening on June 19.
This week, artist Elizabeth Simonson installed two of the three pieces she's contributed to the show. One of them, Synura, is made with the very common material of cellophane tape layered on itself and attached to the gallery wall. Simonson created this work specifically for this show at the Weisman.
For this work, the tape, taken out of its usual utilitarian context, is transformed both in color and form. Synura, referenced in the work's title, is a golden colored algae that forms swimming colonies from a variable number of cells joined together at their posterior ends in a spherical or elongated cluster.
Be among the first to see all the work in Ordinarily Here at a free preview party on Friday, June 18. The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features complimentary hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Local DJ Lori Barbero provides the music.
Elizabth Simonson received her BFA from Hunter College in 1996 and her MFA from Hunter College in 1999. Elizabeth Simonson's work is based on investigations of mathematical systems that replicate the patterns of ebbing and flowing tides. In 2002 she began to make hybrid drawings of rhythmically inflected, parallel strips of masking tape; her made-on-site drawings now include wall-mounted compositions of thin wire, as well as patterns of cuts made in large, rectilinear sheets of black foam. In each case, she begins a task, anticipates its direction, and follows its lead as the composition unfolds and defines itself. She has exhibited internationally at Livingroom-D-lyx, Malmö, Sweden, Plane Space, New York, Post Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and The Soap Factory, Minnneapolis, MN. Her work is included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Goldman Sachs and Hunter College in New York City. Her work has been reviewed in publications that include The New York Times, Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail and the Village Voice. Elizabeth Simonson currently houses her art studio in the Historic Thorp Building & CBC in the NE Minneapolis Arts District in Minnesota.
